UPDATE: MISS RACHEL'S AND THE HUMANE LEAGUE

Last night, TheHumane League  hosted a Wine and (Vegan) Cheese night at Miss Rachel's Pantry in South Philly. The fundraiser, benefiting the League, was attended by vegans, vegetarians and foodies alike, as they sampled appetizers and small bites made locally, cruelty-free and in house.

Rachel  Atcheson, Director of the Philadelphia office of THL, said, "A variety of wines from The Vegan Vine and plenty of Miss Rachel's tasty finger foods and snacks were the perfect excuse for animal activists and supporters from all over the city to take some time to relax and mingle. After meeting some cool new people and eating plenty, everyone headed home full and happy."

URGENT: BLOCK FRACKING IN PA'S STATE PARKS

What do you think of when you imagine Pennsylvania's great outdoors? Flowing rivers,
mighty streams, tree-covered hills, the sounds of birdsong and waterfall? What about an oil fracking pump?

Governor Corbett has authorized a proposal to lease state parks for gas drilling with an executive order that allows the new leasing of our public lands. However, the legislature is required to appropriate the money from any new leasing and therefore can block the proposal. Corbett initially wanted the legislature to authorize $75 million worth of new public lands leasing, but today a Senate committee is poised to INCREASE the amount to $95 million.
Please urge your state legislators to block further leasing of Pennsylvania public lands by opposing the Fiscal Code bill that contains the new revenue.

Click HERE to lodge your protest against this absolutely hideous breach of public trust and our children's future.

Why Action Is Needed Right Now

  • Gov. Corbett's recent lifting of a 2010 executive order puts our state parks at dire risk and opens our state forests to additional gas drilling.
  • While the new executive order calls for no leasing "which would result in additional surface disturbance" on the new leased park or forest land, it does allow for additional disturbances on previously leased lands and will bring intense industrial development to the door step of state parks.
  • Approximately 80 percent of the mineral rights under state parks are not owned by the Commonwealth. The owners of these rights have likely not pursued development because they understand the affinity Pennsylvanians have for state parks and the backlash that would ensue. But if state government leads by example and leases its mineral rights, we will likely see substantial private development near and possibly in our parks.
